Life is better at the beach, they say, and we couldn’t agree more. Something very calming and blissful envelops on a beach: it’s feeling the warmth of the sun, inhaling the refreshing sea air, and listening to the sounds of the waves gently lap against the shore. Or maybe you prefer to be sea bound, enjoying all the fun and exciting water sports on offer, above or under the water. Either way — having that connection to nature and the water, away from it all, allows us to truly relax, unwind, and feel a joyful sense of beach bliss.
If you’re dreaming of your next coastal escape, here’s some inspiration. We’ve compiled a list of 10 popular beach destinations to check out for your next sandy vacation. Lounge on secluded stretches along the tranquil shores of Maui, skate along Fort Lauderdale’s promenade, surf the waves in San Diego — there is something to suit all tastes. The only question is: For that soul-soothing vitamin sea, where will your next beach vacation be? Scroll through the destinations featured below to figure it out.
St. Maarten/St. Martin
St. Maarten/St. Martin is a Caribbean island divided into two nations: one Dutch and the other French. The Dutch side of the island (St. Maarten) is more developed, while the French side (St. Martin) has a more relaxed Caribbean vibe. For an authentic beach experience, check out Grand Case, a small fishing village located on the northwest of the island (St. Martin). During the day enjoy water sports and, in the evening, dine at one of the oceanside restaurants along Boulevard de Grand Case.
Aruba
Aruba is one of the Caribbean’s best islands for beaches. It’s here that you’ll find wide stretches of clean beaches with powdery white sand and a glittering blue-topaz ocean that extends to the distant horizon. Eagle Beach, rated as one of the world’s top beaches, offers idyllic ocean views and relatively calm waters — making it perfect conditions for a serene sea swim.
Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches, Florida
With 23 miles (37 kilometers) of golden-hued shores, and a different beach vibe on almost every block, Greater Fort Lauderdale is home to some of the Sunshine State’s finest beaches. Stroll, cycle, or skate along Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, a nearly 2.5-mile (4 kilometers) promenade featuring outdoor cafes, shops, and art displays. While a bit north at Florida’s stylish (and aptly named) Palm Beaches, palm tree–filled avenues and fewer crowds await. With more than 120 miles (190 kilometers) of local waterways that snake along and in and out of the coast, sunset cruises and other scenic boating excursions are popular here, too.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Recognized as America’s favorite island by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Hilton Head Island is best known for its stunning beaches, natural beauty, and outdoor living. Its beaches aren’t just popular with humans, either. Each year, between May and October, loggerhead turtles nest along the seashores. You may be lucky enough to glimpse one of these ocean beauties in the wild during an eco-friendly kayak tour, along with dolphins, the occasional otter, and maybe even a manatee!
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach, also known as The Beach, is the centerpiece of the Grand Strand and a mecca for family fun. A 60-mile-long (97 kilometers) coastal strip, the Grand Strand traces the Atlantic Ocean and features a variety of beaches with soft sand and abundant sunshine. Highlights in Myrtle Beach include the 1.2-mile-long (2 kilometers) Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade, as well as the 187-foot-tall (57 meters) SkyWheel.
The Hawaiian Islands: Maui, Kaua‘i, and O‘ahu
Aloha vibes and the dreamiest of beaches await on Hawai‘i’s islands. But when it comes to choosing which island to visit, Maui, Kaua‘i, and O‘ahu are all strong contenders. O‘ahu, the most popular of the Hawaiian Islands, is known for its beautiful, swimmable, and most accessible beaches. For a quieter oceanside experience and excellent snorkeling, Maui is for you. And Kaua‘i, with its dramatic and lush, wild beaches, is ideal for those adventurous souls looking for a more active beach experience.
San Diego and Southern Coast, California
Some of California’s best beaches reside in the San Diego area. Whether you’re there to surf, relax, walk your dog off leash (if you’re on a staycation), or bike ride along the promenade, there is a beach for everyone along San Diego’s 70 miles (113 kilometers) of coastline. Surfers flock to La Jolla — known as the Jewel of San Diego — which offers a wide range of surf conditions.
Cancún, Mexico
Originally a sleepy fishing town back in the 1970s, Cancún has since grown into one of North America’s most recognized beach destinations. And it’s the white strand beaches, remote sandbanks, and the sparkling turquoise sea that all contribute to the appeal. One of the most scenic is Playa Delfines (Dolphin Beach), named after a pod of the lovable sea mammals that used to visit, although sightings are now rare.
Costa del Sol, Spain
Home to 100 miles (160 kilometers) of coastline, and with more than 320 days of sunshine each year, it’s the variety of sunny beaches that lends to Costa del Sol’s greatest appeal. That, and tapas! Blue Flag Burriana Beach in Nerja is popular with locals and visitors alike and features exciting water sports including jet skiing. After all the beach fun, enjoy sharing a selection of tasty tapas such as gambas a la plancha (grilled prawns) and patatas bravas (fried potatoes) at Tapas Plaza.
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Beautiful Caribbean beaches await on Grand Cayman. Seven Mile Beach — ranked as the fifth best beach in the Caribbean by Tripadvisor® — is a must visit. Famous for its coral sands, glittering ocean waters, and exclusive properties that overlook the sea, it’s popular with visitors from around the world. For sunset views check out West Bay Beach, while Rum Point offers water sports and great food and drinks — including a rum-infused Rum Slide cocktail at Rum Point Beach Club.
